1st International Geodiversity Day
Today, the 1st International Geodiversity Day is being celebrated around the world. It was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2021 at its 41st General Conference.
In cooperation with the Croatian Geological Survey and the Croatian Geological Society, the Croatian Natural History Museum is joining the celebration of this day with a volunteer clean-up action at a geosite in part of Medvednica Nature Park.
With this action, we want to draw public attention to the special importance of protecting and preserving geodiversity and geoheritage, as their significance for the preservation of nature as a whole is extremely important.

What is geodiversity and why is it important to all of us?
The term geodiversity refers to the variety of rocks, fossils and minerals, landforms and soils, as well as the natural processes that create and change them, both today and throughout millions of years of geological history.
Geodiversity affects our lives in different ways, through various natural, economic and social factors, such as mineral resources and energy, as well as tourism, with geotourism becoming an increasingly important and interesting branch.
It is therefore important to emphasize that geodiversity is essential for the sustainable management of the planet and for the well-being of humanity as a whole.
