History of the Croatian Natural History Museum and the Amadeo Palace
Historic palace
The Croatian Natural History Museum is located in a historic aristocratic palace
on the fortifications of Zagreb’s Upper Town. Between 1797 and 1834, the first
public theatre in Zagreb — the Amadeo Theatre, named after Count Anton Amadeo
de Varkony — operated in this building.
Origins of the collections
The origins of today’s natural history collections date back to the Croatian National
Revival period, when the National Museum was founded in 1846 in Opatička Street.
The collections gradually expanded through the work of distinguished naturalists
and the first museum scholars, such as Spiridion Brusina, Gjuro Pilar, and Dragutin
Gorjanović-Kramberger.
Museum work today
The Museum collects, preserves, researches, and presents Croatia’s natural heritage.
Today, its collections contain more than 2 million specimens of minerals, rocks,
fossils, plants, and animals.
Professional activities are carried out within specialized departments:
geological-paleontological, zoological, mineralogical-petrographic, botanical,
and conservation-preparation departments.
Library, journal and programme
The Museum Library was founded in 1868, while the journal Natura Croatica
has been published since 1992. Since 2000, the Scene Amadeo summer programme has
been held annually in the museum atrium.
Mission and Vision
A researched, valued, and protected natural and cultural heritage of Croatia.
Collection, preservation, protection, presentation, and study of natural history museum materials,
education and popularization of natural sciences, and scientific research aimed at evaluating
and protecting Croatia’s natural heritage.
The Museum possesses a rich library and publishes the scientific journal
Natura Croatica, indexed in numerous international citation databases.
The wealth of natural history materials, thematic exhibitions and workshops,
scientific and professional research, and highly educated staff make it a key
institution for natural sciences and an educational center.
Status as a First-Level Parent Museum
Based on the Museums Act and the Regulations on the Method and Criteria for Integration
into the Museum System of the Republic of Croatia, the Croatian Natural History Museum
is the parent institution for natural history museums in Croatia.
Museum Director Prof. Dr. Tatjana Vlahović is a member of the Museum System Council,
while Dr. Irena Grbac, Museum Advisor, serves as the first-level parent museum coordinator.
Parent museum activities include
- Professional and advisory assistance to museums and other owners of museum collections and materials
- Improvement of professional museum work and enhancement of museum collection protection and preservation
- Coordination of museum work and development within the Museum System
- Professional supervision of museum activities
- Other duties in accordance with the Museums Act
