Croatian Natural History Museum Renovates Amadeo Palace with EU Funds

Another contract under the EU call for the restoration of cultural heritage was signed at the building of the Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds. The project is entitled “Culture, Science and Education in the Function of Economic Development – the New Croatian Natural History Museum”.

The project will be co-financed from EU funds in the amount of HRK 3,734,000.00, while the total value of the project is HRK 4,667,500.00.

The contract was signed by the Minister of Regional Development and EU Funds, Gabrijela Žalac, dipl. oec., the Director of the Central Finance and Contracting Agency for EU Programmes and Projects, Tomislav Petric, and the Director of the Croatian Natural History Museum, Prof. Dr. Tatjana Vlahović, dipl. ing. geol.

The ceremonial signing was attended by Jelena Ricov, Head of the City of Zagreb Office for EU Programmes and Projects, and Dr. Iva Mihoci, senior curator and President of the Expert Council of the Croatian Natural History Museum.

Non-refundable funds were awarded to the Croatian Natural History Museum for the preparation of project documentation within the first group of activities of the call “Preparation and Implementation of Integrated Development Programmes Based on the Restoration of Cultural Heritage”.

The project will produce all the necessary documentation that will enable a successful application for the second group of activities of this call, namely the implementation of renovation works on Amadeo Palace, where the Croatian Natural History Museum is located.

The renovation of the palace will solve the main problems preventing the further development of the Museum, namely the lack of space and outdated equipment. With the help of EU funds, all visitors will be offered a new, more modern, more entertaining, and unique natural history museum, which will greatly contribute to the development of cultural tourism in Zagreb’s Upper Town.

“This is another in a series of projects that will make smart use of EU funds to connect tourism and the preservation of cultural heritage. The revitalization of Amadeo Palace will enrich the already extensive tourist and cultural offer of the Upper Town, which will ultimately contribute to the economic and social development of the whole of Zagreb,” said Minister Gabrijela Žalac.

Amadeo Palace is listed in the Register of Cultural Property of the Republic of Croatia, which contains around 8,000 registered cultural properties, seven of which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List and 14 on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Within EU funds, cultural heritage is defined in the Operational Programme Competitiveness and Cohesion as an area of special importance for the socio-economic development of the Republic of Croatia.

A total of HRK 380 million from the European Regional Development Fund has been allocated to support projects that restore cultural heritage, including investment in cultural assets and the development of additional, primarily tourism-related content or services, in order to contribute to sustainable development at the local and regional level.
