Museums Outside Museums – MIM 2018.
Museums Outside Museums will take place from May 16 to May 20, 2018.
Project authors: M.Sc. Nediljka Prlj Šimić and Katarina Krizmanić.
Visual design author: Nedjeljko Mikac.
The Croatian Natural History Museum, in cooperation with the Zagreb Tourist Board, is organizing the event Museums Outside Museums, which will be held on the occasion of International Museum Day from May 16 to May 20, 2018, at the corner of Bakačeva and Cesarčeva Streets, close to Ban Jelačić Square.
The project is conceived as a step outside traditional museum spaces, bringing rich cultural heritage closer to visitors, including an increasing number of tourists, while at the same time improving interaction between museums and visitors through a new medium and an open public space.
The program should also contribute to better communication between museums, which is one of the prerequisites for planning joint museum projects that could become an important foundation of the future cultural strategy of the City of Zagreb.
The aim of the Museums Outside Museums event is to raise public awareness of museum heritage, presenting Zagreb museums in an innovative and unconventional way and further enriching the cultural and tourist offer of the City of Zagreb.
The museums will be presented in the so-called MIM Pavilion – an imposing and attractive installation built from an airy wooden structure in the shape of a nest, whose “wing” will host the participating museums: the Croatian Natural History Museum, the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, the Museum of Arts and Crafts, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum.
Each participating museum will present itself in its own module, displaying recognizable objects or faithful replicas, and will also take part in organizing accompanying content for this cultural event, including workshops, lectures and presentations.
The attraction of the event will also be enhanced by a replica of Penkala’s airplane, which will be placed next to the pavilion. The key exhibit of the event will be the model of the new Croatian Natural History Museum.
The idea is for MIM to become a kind of museum festival and, in time, to include all Zagreb and Croatian museums, followed by guest European museums.

Croatian Natural History Museum (HPM): “Cabinet of Wonders”
Archaeological Museum in Zagreb (AMZ): “Archaeo-walk around Zagreb and its surroundings”
